Social Security disability insurance benefits are administered and paid through the Social Security disability insurance program. To be eligible for disability insurance benefits, you must be unable to work by reason of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that can be expected to result in death, or has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of twelve months. Social Security does not award short term or partial disability benefits like some programs such as workers’ compensation. In addition to your inability to work, you must also have earned sufficient “work credits” to be eligible for Social Security disability insurance benefits.
